Mont Blanc Tunnel reopened Monday 16 Dec 2024 at 10pm

Ther Mkont Blanc tunnel has just reopened 16-12-2024 after 15 weeks of closure

Reopening of the Mont-Blanc tunnel this Monday evening after 15 weeks of work.

After fifteen weeks of work and intense mobilization, the reopening of the Mont-Blanc tunnel took place at 10pm local on Monday 16 December  2024.

This last day of closure was dedicated to the binational safety exercise, under the aegis of the French and Italian authorities. More than 100 women and men were mobilized to test the effectiveness of the emergency technical systems.

Rebuilding part of the Mont-Blanc tunnel vault

The Mont-Blanc tunnel has just completed 105 days of work, mobilizing 150 people, or 150,000 hours of work to rebuild part of the vault.

The rebuild is part of a structural test, to determine the effectiveness of different the 'slab' techniques. The mid-section of the tunnel now has  about 1700m of slab used to create the vault.
Of the 1700m, different sections have variations of the slab. Yesterday saw the completion of the final 300m test section.
So now we wait, to see over time, which slab application is most effective.

Also, a new LED lighting system was applied to 2400m of the tunnel. With each future closure, more sections of the tunnel will receive the new LED.

You can check-out the traffic flow yourself with  4 webcams. Two on the French side and 2 on the Italian side.
Right now, the traffic on the Italian side is very light, so the flow is good.
On the French side, it is busy and moving slowly.
