With the heavy snowfall since Sunday, driving at the foot of Mont Blanc is not easy this Monday, December 23, 2024.
Many vehicles have found themselves stuck in the snow, despite the continuous work of the snowplows. There have been a few road traffic accidents. Fortunately, nothing serious for the moment. The roads around Passy and Sallanches have the most RTAs.

The Mont Blanc Tunnel
This morning, the Mont Blanc tunnel had to close from 6 to 8:30 a.m. This was to allow for preventive avalanche triggering. The tunnel re-opened after all high threat avalanches had been triggered. So the route between France and Italy is safe. But on the French side, access to the tunnel is still disrupted. "The road remains white and traffic is blocked at times," warns the operator.
Trains in the Chamonix Valley
Also, the rail network in the Chamonix Valley is disrupted. Since 10:40 am, no trains are moving between Argentière and Vallorcine. The Mont-Blanc Express operator is stopping trains from Le Fayet at Chamonix.
The Col des Montets
The road over the Col des Montets to Vallorcine and Switzerland remains closed due to the high risk of avalanche. Motorists and pedestrians are asked to respect the signs in place and not to venture onto the paths at the foot of the slopes and respect all the signs in place.
Access to the Col des Montets tunnel is temporarily closed at Montroc.
Ski Areas and Resorts
Unfortunately, excessive snow does compromise the ski areas. Many of the high altitude ski areas are closed or partially closed because of the very high risk of avalanche.
