Video of the new rock collapse on the west face of the Drus

La vidéo du nouvel écroulement dans la face ouest des Drus

Tuesday, January 21st 2025, watch the video of the new rock collapse on the west face of the Drus, that at first glance does not seem to be linked to the degradation of the permafrost.

This Tuesday, around 1:30 p.m., a new rock collapse was triggered on the west face of the Drus. On the video shared by the guide Sébastien Montaz-Rosset on social networks, an impressive cloud of dust seems to come out of the mountain.

Ludovic Ravanel, geomorphologist and research director at the CNRS explains to us: "The Drus produce landslides characterized by a significant quantity of dust for a fairly small actual volume of falls".

Even if the scientific analyses have not yet been carried out, it seems that this collapse has no direct link with the degradation of the permafrost but rather results from the freeze-thaw phases succeeding one another on the cliff.

What is more worrying for mountain users is the time of year in which this happened, since this type of phenomenon normally occurs in spring or summer.
