Montagne Leaders, a leading publication on tourism development of ski stations and pistes, has published the traditional Top 100 in its last number 263 (Sept/Oct 2017).
According to Le Duphine, the Compagnie du Mont-Blanc retains the top position in the ski operator ranking with €83,18 million total revenue (+ 2,04%) in front of SEP (La Plagne) and SETAM (Val Thorens).
The CMB (Chamonix, Les Houches and Megève) now accounts for 7,56% of the activity behind the Compagnie des Alpes group (33,73%), which manages ten larger ski resorts (Val d'Isère, Flaine, Les Deux Alpes...) and ahead of SOFIVAL (Avoriaz la Rosiere, Valmorel) realizing 4,86% of the volume of business.
According to the professional association for ski area operators (DSF), the Chamoniard ski operator alone accounts for half of the summer activity of the French ski lifts (5% of annual turnover).
Top 100 French ski areas
According to le Duphine, this Top 100 reveals a situation of contrasts:
If the total revenue realised by the first 100 French ski resorts and the addition of turnover between summer 2016 and the winter season 2016/2017, beats a new record of over one billion euros recorded, the number of skier-days is dwindling for the fourth consecutive season: €51,1 million, a decrease of 1,5% compared to the previous year according to the DSF.
Another gap is the widening between large and small ski resorts. Indeed, the first 30 ski resorts realized 74,64% of the total of Top 100, so the other 70 ski resorts the remaining 25,36%.
