To access the Montenvers-Mer de Glace site at 1,913m, visitors take the famous red funicular Train du Montenvers, from Chamonix train station (Gare du Montenvers).
The Train of Montenvers Mer de Glace runs every day, from 10 p.m. to 4 p.m.
This red funicular train is both the most magical and the swiftest way to reach the Mer de Glace from Chamonix. It takes only twenty minutes to climb up to the Montenvers site.

From 16 Dec 2016, the Montenvers site reopened partially with access to:
- Glacier gondola lift;
- Ice Cave;
- New restaurant Le Panoramique Mer de Glace.
To reach the Mer de Glace and the Ice Cave, tourists can take the gondola lift down from the Montenvers station.
Skiers who descended the Vallée Blanche, have already traversed the Mer de Glace but they can stop and check out the Ice Cave and visit the new Panoramique Mer de Glace. The smart way to have a culinary experience after descending the Vallée Blanche is to start early ski with a steady pace and arrive at Le Panoramic from the start of the lunch at 11:30.

Attention for tourists: during winter, the cable car up from the Mer de Glace is crowded from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. with skiers coming from the Vallée Blanche.
Also, the train back to Chamonix can be really crowded.
