Chamonix: Extensive renovation works for the D.Z of Les Bois

On Tuesday 26 July 2022, the Mayor of Chamonix, Eric Fournier and the President of the Departmental Council of Haute-Savoie, Martial Saddier signed a partnership agreement for the financing of the renovation of the Dropping Zone (DZ) of Les Bois in Chamonix.

The Dropping Zone of Les Bois will have three new facilities:

  1. a funeral space;
  2. a kennel for PGHM dogs;
  3. a storage area;

The doors of the helicopter hangar are also changed and a garage is transformed into an office.

A project to improve the PGHM's working conditions

“These major changes will allow all the entities located in the DZ of Les Bois to benefit from better working conditions. Other projects are to come. It's very encouraging because we see that mountain rescue in Chamonix is constantly evolving and the authorities are following us, " said Yannick Herman, commander of the aerial section of the Chamonix gendarmerie.

“These structuring facilities are absolutely essential for our municipality. When you are on this tarmac, there is a lot of affect. We can be both like today, in projection and optimism, but also in great moments of drama. This is why we must always provide the necessary means to the teams of the PGHM and the Civil Security", said the Mayor of Chamonix, Eric Fournier

A project estimated at 700.000 euros

The town hall of Chamonix, owner of the place and the Departmental Council will each finance half of all the work, the overall cost of which is estimated at €700.000 including tax.

"We are the leading department in France in terms of mountain rescue, with 1,200 interventions per year out of 5,000 nationally. This investment, we also see it as a reward or a thank you because their work is done in good agreement and in an exemplary way, "says Martial Saddier, the president of the Departmental Council of Haute Savoie.

The mountain rescue teams will be able to take full advantage of their new facilities at the end of 2023.
