Tramway of Mont-Blanc : season extended by one week

On Wednesday 14 September 2022, the Compagnie du Mont-Blanc decided to extend the season by one week for the Mont-Blanc Tramway, following a summer season disrupted by the severe drought that hit the mountain.

The Mont-Blanc Tramway, or TMB, departs from Le Fayet (580 meters) and arrives at the Nid d'Aigle (2372 meters) after a 12.4 km journey. It is the highest cogwheel train in France, which transports around 180.000 customers every year.

The TMB will therefore welcome hikers and mountaineers free of charge, from 19 to 25 September. The traffic will be significantly reduced at two round trips per day.

The mayor of Saint-Gervais Jean-Marc Peillex, declared that "Free admission will be implemented on an experimental basis because there will not be many customers". “I have one regret. The Department had to ask the delegatee for this extension, where as the latter naturally did so for the Aiguille du Midi and Montenvers”.

According to the Dauphine, the extension could not go beyond a week for technical reasons.

Indeed, the new engines of the TMB will have to be tested throughout the autumn to be able to finally take service in December 2022.
