Tomorrow, October 24, 2024, the Chamonix Sports Club opens registrations for its mountain running events at the end of June. No less than 40% of participants will have to come by train and all competitors will have to offset their carbon emissions.
For the 2025 edition of the Mont-Blanc marathon, the Chamonix Sports Club is implementing conditional registrations, since 40% of the bibs will be allocated to participants arriving by train.
The idea is to reduce the carbon footprint of the trail event. A study by the Aircoop agency showed that for the 2023 edition, 96% of the carbon impact of the Mont-Blanc marathon was linked to the transport used by runners and their companions before the event, to get to the Chamonix valley. The organizers are therefore working to significantly reduce this figure.
Mandatory carbon offsetting!
Another new feature for this next edition: carbon offsetting of participants' journeys (home/Chamonix) will be mandatory.
Over the past two years, donations have been made on a voluntary basis. More than 2,000 runners have played the game, which has raised €5,000 donated to the Sylv'acctes associations and the Centre de recherche des écologiques d'altitudes (Crea) Mont-Blanc. For 2025, this modality will therefore become mandatory for all, i.e. around 10,000 runners over the weekend.
