It was 3 p.m. this Sunday 11 July when a climber’s rope triggered an avalanche that swept the north face of Mont Blanc du Tacul. This one crossed the trail at the top of the route and passed near the lower part.
Alerted, the PGHM of Chamonix conducted a reconnaissance. According to them, no rope was found in the flow. Grégory Coubat the photo author said “Saturday night’s thunderstorms brought heavy snow. At the Col du Midi, you sink about thirty inches, at mid-calf, a little less if you stay in the trail. So at 3,500 meters, the conditions quickly changed as Saturday was a very beautiful day. For the large rope of the Chamonix Guides Company, the snow coat looked very stable. One did not sink into the snow at all by walking on the Glacier du Géant.
This avalanche this Sunday is reminiscent of other more terrible events, with the dramas at Mont Blanc du Tacul in 2008 and 2013, or at Mont Maudit in 2012. It is clear that this year, the summer is not permanently installed and the rainfall can still bring beautiful amounts of snow in the high mountains. Caution is advised!
